Original hand-colored engraving of the city of Mérida, in Badajoz.

Provenance: Painterly and Historical Voyage of Spain. A descendant of Spaniards on his father's side, Alexander Laborde came to Spain as an attaché at the embassy of Lucian Bonaparte and toured the peninsula between 1800 and 1805 as an archaeologist. The result of his study of numerous monuments is his work Painterly and Historical Voyage of Spain, a monumental, precise, erudite, and very careful work. Its four volumes contain a compendium of political and civil history, many archaeological monuments, and more than 900 engravings thanks to the collaboration of great draftsmen and engravers. This meant a great cost in printing, so he had to resort to the support of King Charles IV and other European courts and even seriously compromised his personal fortune.

Print dimensions: 31 x 40.5 cm.

Engraver: FB Lorieux, French 1786-1810 (fl.) from a drawing by Ligier.

Very good conservation
