Original engraving of the Basilica of Santa Eulalia in Mérida (Badajoz). The famous 'Hornito' is preserved in the atrium of the Basilica, the most notable popular landmark in the city due to its connection with the cult of the Martyr Eulalia.
Provenance: Painterly and Historical Voyage of Spain. A descendant of Spaniards on his father's side, Alexander Laborde came to Spain as an embassy attaché to Lucian Bonaparte and toured the peninsula between 1800 and 1805 as an archaeologist. The result of his study of numerous monuments is his work Painterly and Historical Voyage of Spain, a monumental, precise, erudite, and very careful work. Its four volumes contain a compendium of political and civil history, many archaeological monuments and more than 900 engravings thanks to the collaboration of great draftsmen and engravers.
