Old engraving of the Leaning Tower of Zaragoza from the 19th century. On the right is the palace of the Counts of Bureta.

In his representation of the now-vanished Torre Nueva, the Scottish painter David Roberts shows the most romantic vision of the building, drawing it with an exaggerated inclination, impossible in reality, which reflects key elements of this artistic movement such as emotional intensity, drama, and subjectivity; as well as an interest in the exotic, history and folklore, and the theme of magnitude. This engraving also shows the beautiful architecture of the tower and offers us a perspective of Torre Nueva Street at the beginning of the 19th century.

The author of the work, David Roberts (1796-1864), is one of the best representatives of Romanticism in Great Britain, with his watercolors and engravings of monuments, where alterations in scale and the addition of vegetation and other elements to reinforce the picturesque and evocative character are some of his hallmarks. The drawing was made on a trip through Spain between 1832-33 and was later engraved by Henry Adlard and published in London, in 1837, by Robert Jennings & Co.
