The engraving shows a picture of the Battle of Bunker Hill, which took place on June 17, 1775, as part of the siege of Boston during the American War of Independence. General Israel Putnam was in charge of the revolutionary forces, while Major General William Howe commanded the British forces. Although the battle is known as Bunker Hill ("Bunker Hill"), most of the fighting actually took place on nearby Breed's Hill. The result was a Pyrrhic victory for the British, who suffered more than a thousand casualties. Howe's immediate objective was achieved, but the siege was not affected; however, it showed that the Americans were determined to put up a pitched battle.
