This illustration depicts the first torpedo fired by the Nautilus submarine. It destroyed the Danish ship "Orothée," provided by the British Admiralty, in Walmer Bay in front of Prime Minister William Pitt. The designer of the Nautilus was Robert Fulton (1765–1815), an American engineer and inventor. He is also credited with inventing some of the first naval torpedoes for use by the British Royal Navy.
