Ambrose of Milan, venerated as Saint Ambrose,[a] was a theologian and statesman who served as Bishop of Milan from 374 to 397. Born Augusta Trevororum under the Roman Empire, he is Doctor of the Church and one of the four Fathers of the Church of the West along with St. Augustine, St. Jerome of Stridon and St. Gregory the Great. He expressed himself prominently as a public figure, fiercely promoting the Christian faith against Arianism and paganism.
