José del Castillo studied in Rome with Corrado Giaquinto and returned with him to Madrid in 1753 when Giaquinto was named painter to Fernando VI. The painting by Mateo Cerezo that this print reproduces was located at the time in the Convent of Agustinos de Recoletos in Madrid but is now lost.
