Sarah Malcolm - Boys Peeping at Nature /-Subscription Ticket to Harlot's Progress - William Hogarth - Heath edition 1822 Size: 48,5x63,5 cms. Paper with watermark '1820'. Condition: There is some smudging or imperfections mostly to the margins and from handling. Sarah Malcolm: When 22-year-old Sarah Malcolm was arrested for a triple murder in 1733, Hogarth visited her in prison shortly before she was hanged and had a print on the market within three days. Hogarth's painting of Sarah Malcolm is in the National Gallery of Scotland. Boys Peeping at Nature was first created as a subscription ticket first for the set of engravings, "A Harlot's Progress" (1732), then for the individual print, "Strolling Actresses" (1738) and finally, "Moses Brought to Pharaoh's Daughter" and "Paul Before Felix" (1752). Like "Analysis of Beauty" and "The Battle of the Pictures" it represents a statement by Hogarth upon the nature of his art. Three putti are drawing or painting the likeness of an ancient statue representing Mother Nature. In the earlier states of this engraving the putti in the center actually peers up Nature's dress -- thus 'peeping at nature'. In this the final state, Hogarth gives this putti a line drawing to hold towards the spectator. As this version was used as a subscription ticket for the two 1752 religious engravings listed above, Hogarth probably thought it advisable to transform the more earthy aspects of this engraving. This original engraving and etching is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. It is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the British artist, William Hogarth
