Background: 1466 Hayreddin Barbarossa was born on the Greek island of Lesbos. In his youth he joined his brother on pirate raids in the Mediterranean. 1518 When his brother died, Barbarossa succeeded him as leader of the Algiers corsairs. He then adopted the nickname “Barbarossa.”
