Provenance: L’Artiste. Production date: circa 1840. Description: Subject borrowed from Egyptian history and illustrating the moment when Egypt became a province of the Persian Empire. Psammetichus III or Psanemite for the Greeks, last pharaoh of the 26th dynasty of the so-called Saite period, was defeated and captured at Pelusium by Cambyses II. Psammenite remains motionless, in the middle of the pyramids of Ghiseh in front of the Persians who are taking her son to execution, her daughter who, having become a servant, goes to draw water with a jug in her hand and the Egyptians who are lamenting.
