Original 19th-century lithograph of the Castle of Alba de Tormes, colored.
The Castle of the Dukes of Alba is a fortress located in the Spanish town of Alba de Tormes, in the province of Salamanca. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when King Ferdinand II of León had a simple watchtower built. In the 13th century, King Sancho IV of Castile converted the original tower into a castle. It was devastated by the conflicts of the time of King Henry IV of Castile and by that of the Communities, but later the 1st Duke of Alba de Tormes, García Álvarez de Toledo and Carrillo de Toledo, rebuilt it and turned it into his private palace. It remains the property of the House of Alba to this day, although only the keep of the six it once had remains.
