Winter scene on the Catterskills Catskill Mountains
This antique engraving shows an atmospheric moonlit scene in the Catskill Mountains, New York State, in around 1840. It is a steel engraving by John Rogers based on the work of William Henry Bartlett (1809 – 1854), an English artist. The bear and the trees cast long shadows across a frozen lake, and there are stars in the sky. At lower right, two hunters with rifles lie in wait, while in the distance is a figure perhaps hurrying away from the bear.
