Original 19th-century engraving of the Inquisition Prison in Córdoba, Andalusia.

The Spanish Inquisition, founded in 1478, arrived in Córdoba in 1482, and the city's tribunal was the second to be established in Castile, after the one in Seville.

This engraving, based on another drawing by Roberts and entitled "Inquisition Prison," shows the river, the Albolafia, and the Alcázar in the background. Historically, the area around the mills has been linked to deaths and executions, and since the time of the Caliphate, the bodies of those executed were displayed there. In Christian times, the unfortunates sentenced by the Inquisition would be burned on the islets near the bridge. These data, as well as the architectural configuration of the Albolafia agree with other authors, although the landscape that surrounds it (gardens, walls, towers, aqueducts...) seems reinterpreted with singular audacity.
