LeRoy Wilson Kingsman discusses the spelling variants of the town in his book "Owego. Some account of the early settlement of the village in Tioga County, N.Y., called Ah-wa-ga by the Indians, which name was corrupted by gradual evolution into Owago, Owego, Owegy and finally Owego."
