Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. 'Escapan entre las llamas' ('They escape through the flames'). Plate 41 from Los Desastres de la Guerra. 1st edition (1863). Francisco de Goya made Los Desastres etching series between 1810 and 1815 but they were not published until 1863 after his death. This etching also has the number 15 at the bottom side on the left. The first edition was made in two series. In the second one some typographical errors were corrected. This print belongs to the first etching series even though in this specific one there was no typographical error corrected. Typographical correction con be appreciated on other plates of the set of impressions this prints belongs to (e.g. on plate 47, 'Asi sucedió'). According to Thomas Harris, the first edition "a" (before correction of typographical errors) was made in the workshop of Laurenciano Potenciano for the Real Academia and completed in March 1863. The first edition of Los Desastres was issued in eight groups of ten impressions numbered in stencil on the front 1 to 8. The front cover of this group of ten impressions is numbered with '5' (the image of front cover is included but it is not part of the sale). Well preserved. Plate size: 16x23,5 cm. Paper size: 24,7x34,5 cm.
