Hudibras Encounters the Skimmington Plate XII, after Hogarth. 1 of a set of 12 from the Cook Edition. This original engraving is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by James Heath in 1822. According to Ronald Paulson at least four editions followed that of 1822 between 1828 and 1840 without date. Plate size 29cm x 51cm. Paper size: 49x63 cms. Paper with watermark '1820'. Condition: In good condition. Signs of roughness along one edge from removal from binding. There is some smudging or imperfections mostly to the margins and from handling. General age related toning. Hudibras. Taken from the Poem of Hudibras, written by Samuel Butler, 'Hudibras' satirizes the hypocrisy and pomposity of seventeenth century Puritanism and many of the other factions involved in the English Civil War through the adventures in 12 engravings of Knight errant, Sir Hudibras. William Hogarth (1697-1764). Taken from the Poem of Hudibras, written by Samuel Butler, exposing the villany and hypocricy of those times. The work is a satirical polemic upon Roundheads, Puritans, Presbyterians and many of the other factions involved in the English Civil War.
