Between 1129 and 1171 it was used as a fortress by the Normans. Later, it became the property of the kings of the Catalan-Aragonese crown and the royal veguer was established. Several monarchs made reforms, the most important being those of Jaume II, between 1304 and 1312, and those of Pere III. From the 16th century onwards, the tower became a military barracks and suffered severe damage during Napoleon's occupation of the city. The current building retains a fully medieval style, although with numerous Roman-era elements.
