Nicolaas Jarry took part as a Zeeland privateer in the Fourth English War (1780-1784). The Republic of the United Netherlands then fought with France against the strong naval power of England.
The successes of the Zeeland privateers were sung in the 'Kaperslied' by the Zeeland poet Jacobus Bellamy. Of all the privateer ships, he called the Vlissinger 'the owner', which 'makes the best loot'. This was the fast sailing cutter of the Frenchman Nicolaas Jarry, who sailed for the Zeeland company Nortier.
