Venice, The Lagoon. Engraver: Walter Henry Sweet (1889-1949). Artist: after John Shapland (1865-1929). Media / technique: etching. Signed in pencil left hand side lower margin "John Shapland" and on right hand side lower margin "W H Sweet". Description: An attractive view looking across the Venice Lagoon towards the Campanile in St Marks Square. Production date: circa 1920's. Plate mark: 13,5 x18 cms. Condition: good. Walter Henry Sweet ( 1889-1943) attended Exeter School of Art, where Shapland was the Principal from 1899-1913. He painted in watercolour and oils and concentrated on the moorland and coastal scenes of the West Country as well as being a good etcher. His work was exhibited locally. During the 1st World War he was with The Devonshire Regiment and saw active service abroad. In 1932 he left Exeter and joined the well known firm of Valentines in Dundee where he produced landscape and floral designs etc for their postcards. John Shapland ( 1865 to 1929) was a painter of seascapes and landscapes and exhibited at the RA, also in Paris and the USA. Sweet produced many of Shaplands etchings in partnership with him.
