Pieter van der Aa was born in the Dutch city of Leiden in 1659 and died in that same city in August 1733. He was a Dutch publisher and geographer. As an engraver he began his career in Leiden in 1683, as a Latin editor, publishing classic texts on medicine or science. As his business progressed, he became a map and atlas editor. His ambition was to become the best engraver in Leiden, something he achieved in 1715 when he was appointed the first engraver and printer in the city and its university.
