  • Spain

Antique prints and views of Spain

Over four hundred antique prints of Spain, from the small copper engravings published by Pieter van der Aa in Leiden in 1707 and 1715 to the plates of Laborde's Voyage pittoresque, the Romantic lithographs of Parcerisa, nineteenth-century steel engravings and twentieth-century etchings and drawings by Eduardo Rodríguez Samper.

Spain was a great subject of the European travel print. Foreign engravers recorded Madrid, Seville, Granada and Toledo, pilgrims to Compostela, markets, ports and costume long before photography, so these plates record how towns once looked.

Browse by province to find views of your own city. Every piece is an original of its period unless stated otherwise, with technical details and measurements.

  • Europe

    Antique prints of Europe

This is the largest section of the shop: nearly 1,500 antique prints of Europe, from the sixteenth century to the twentieth. Steel and copper engravings, lithographs, wood engravings and original drawings show cathedrals, castles, ports and landscapes from the British Isles to the Rhine, the Alps and the Mediterranean.

British engravers such as Edward Francis Finden, J. Storer and J. Greig are well represented, along with French steel engravings by Rouargue. Typical pieces include the churches of Oxford, Katz castle on the Rhine, the cloister of Chester cathedral and the Drachenfels.

Browse by country to narrow the selection. All prints are period originals unless stated otherwise, with a technical description and measurements for every piece.

  • The Americas

    Antique prints of the Americas

Our antique prints of the Americas run from 1656 to 1882 and cover the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and the Caribbean. Steel engravings by Robert Hinshelwood, Henry Adlard, Robert Sands and Samuel Valentine Hunt show the Niagara falls, the Catskills and the St Clair river with its Chippewa inhabitants, and a coloured lithograph of 1862 records an old house on William Street in New York.

Historical subjects are also present: the Declaration of Independence, Roger Williams among the Narragansett, and a seventeenth-century Dutch engraving of Piet Heyn's capture of the silver fleet.

All pieces are period originals unless stated otherwise, with a technical description and measurements.

  • Asia

    Antique prints of Asia

Our antique prints of Asia date from 1785 to 1898 and reach from the Holy Land to Japan. Jerusalem and the biblical sites are the largest group, in steel engravings by Charles Cousen, Edward Goodall and Samuel Bradshaw and in coloured prints published at Munich by Bruch and Meermann in 1861. Persia follows, with plates from the Lemaître workshop of 1841, and there are views of India, Canton and Japanese scenes in wood engraving.

The Orientalist illustrators of the nineteenth century travelled with the archaeologists and diplomats, and their prints are still the most accessible period images of these regions.

All pieces are period originals unless stated otherwise, with a technical description and measurements.

  • Africa

    Antique Views of Africa

Two centuries of printed views of Africa, from 1687 to 1886: the marabout of Bouzaréah in Algeria, funerals near Tangier, the Suez Canal at Port Said, Saint Helena and scenes of Guinea, engraved by Pedro Pérez de Castro, Nathaniel Parr, Rico and Llopis, among others.

A broad collection for anyone interested in the continent's colonial-era iconography, from North Africa to the Cape, in techniques from copper engraving to early photomechanical illustration. All pieces are original prints of their period, sold with a technical sheet and exact measurements.

  • Australia and Oceania

Antique Views of Australia and Oceania

A small group of original prints from the Pacific: William Byrne's 1777 engraving of Amsterdam Island, Tonga, published to illustrate Cook's voyages, T. Kelly's 19th-century view of New Caledonian islanders and their canoes, and an anonymous 1834 watercolour of Kenwick.

Of interest to collectors of Pacific exploration prints and to anyone seeking an early depiction of Cook-era voyages. Each piece is an original of its time, with a technical sheet stating technique, date and measurements.
