Original etching by Francisco de Goya, plate No. 56 of The Disasters of War, titled "Al cementerio". Two men carry a dead body on their way to the cemetery, while other victims of the famine that ravaged Madrid lie on the ground.
It belongs to the 1937 edition of the Calcografía Nacional, printed by Rupérez during the Spanish Civil War for the Ministry of Public Instruction. The first five sets, numbered 1 to 5, were dedicated to Stalin, Eleanor Roosevelt and Azaña, President of the Republic, two being left unassigned; fifteen further sets, numbered 6 to 20, were issued on Imperial Japan paper. This impression bears the number 19 on the back. One of the first sets printed in 1937 was given by the Spanish ambassador in London to the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it was exhibited. The print carries the blind stamp with the initials CN surrounded by the legend "Calcografía Nacional Ministerio de Instrucción Pública". Thomas Harris states that it is a very well engraved edition.
