Excellent, finely detailed engraving by William Hogarth (1697-1764): plate 2 of the series "A Rake's Progress", published on 25 June 1735. Young Tom Rakewell, newly heir to a fortune, holds his levée surrounded by those who live at his expense: the music master at the harpsichord, the fencing master, the dancing master with his fiddle, a landscape gardener with his plan, a jockey with the cup won at Epsom, a hired bravo and a horn player, while he reads a letter of recommendation.
Hogarth first painted the oils and then made a series of eight engravings on this satirical subject, one of his most famous works. At the lower right it reads "Plate 2d", and below are the inscription "Invented & by Wm Hogarth & Publish'd according to Act of Parliament June ye 25, 1735" and verses. It has a collector's stamp at the lower right.

Condition: Good impression; the print is trimmed to the edge of the image and text and laid down on a backing sheet; overall toning, stronger on the backing, and a few small scuffs; collector's stamp at the lower right.
