Excellent original print after drawings by the important English painter George Morland (1763-1804), published on 3 January 1801 by John P. Thompson, Great Newport Street, London. Two figure studies share the same sheet: on the left, a young man seated under a tree smoking a clay pipe beside a table with a tankard and a candle; on the right, a sportsman in a hat, seated with his gun, whose dog rests its paws on his knee, with a jug and a glass on the table.
Morland was one of the great painters of English rural life, and his studies of grooms, country folk and animals were widely circulated in print. This one is etched in the crayon manner, with the characteristic grain of soft-ground etching, which faithfully reproduces the stroke of the drawing. Each composition is signed in the plate "G. Morland", and the publication line appears in the lower margin.
