Pair of anonymous original pencil drawings of English Gothic architecture, mounted on a single sheet. Above, St. James's church in Colchester (Essex), with its battlemented tower and clock, traceried windows and ivy-clad ruins by the railings; below, the chancel and sacristy of Belton church (Lincolnshire), with a large Gothic window above the sacristy door.

Both are titled in pencil by the artist: "St. James. Colchester" and "Belton Church. Chancel & Sacristy 1854"; the support sheet is also inscribed "Belton. Lincolnshire. 1854". A delicate witness to the Victorian taste for drawing medieval architecture.

Medium: Graphite pencil on paper, laid down on a support sheet.
Artist / after: Anonymous English artist.
Date: 1854 (the Belton drawing dated).
Dimensions: 7 x 4.7 in (17.8 x 12 cm) and 6.9 x 4.9 in (17.5 x 12.5 cm).
