Original wood engraving after a drawing by Gustave Doré for the Inferno of the Divine Comedy: the heavenly messenger opens the gates of the city of Dis with his wand while Dante and Virgil look on and the damned writhe in the foreground.
It corresponds to canto IX of the Inferno. Doré published his illustrated Inferno in 1861, and the blocks were reissued throughout the second half of the century.
