Debucourt (1755-1832) was the great French master of the tonal print, and the velvety quality of this impression comes from his command of aquatint. Hippolyte Lecomte (1781-1857), a painter of historical and genre scenes, supplied the compositions for a pair of prints - Le Matin and La Nuit - meant to hang facing each other.
