A pair of original pencil drawings of 1869, mounted on a single card. The first shows a fishing smack beached on the shore, its masts and rigging minutely drawn and other craft in the roadstead; it is dated "Ab. 28th /69". The second is a bird's-eye view of Hastings from the cliff, with the town packed into the valley, inscribed "Hastings, April /69".
Sketchbook studies taken from nature, with the freshness and detail proper to Victorian amateur drawing of an educated hand.
Medium: Pencil on paper.
Date: April 1869.
Dimensions: 5.4 x 4.3 in (13.8 x 11 cm) each drawing.
Condition: Good. Both drawings are pasted to a mounting card; the paper shows light toning and some foxing at the edges.
