Hand-colored wood engraving published in La Ilustración Española y Americana, showing the landing at the port of Alicante of Spanish workers fleeing Oran, repatriated by the steamers "Besós" and "Correo de Cartagena". Made after photographs sent in by D. A. Marcili Oliver.
In June 1881 the Bou Amama rising in western Algeria set off panic among the European settlers: some nine thousand Spaniards returned to the ports of the Levante between 11 and 22 June, an episode the magazine followed with several prints such as this one.
