Large copper engraving of Napoleon in his study at the Tuileries, after the celebrated painting by Paul (Hippolyte) Delaroche: the emperor standing beside his desk in the uniform of a colonel of grenadiers, with the star of the Legion of Honor. The central composition is surrounded by a border of small engraved vignettes with episodes of his life, radiate "N" monograms and a trophy of flags at the foot.
Delaroche's portrait, painted in 1838, fixed the image of a brooding, weary Napoleon that replaced the imperial hero, and was one of the most widely circulated compositions in 19th-century printmaking. It is a large piece and uncommon on the market with the border of vignettes complete.
