Monochrome watercolor in grays: the farmstead of Gatesgarth at the head of the valley, with Buttermere shining between the fellsides and a large tree framing the foreground. Confidently handled, the planes built up in superimposed washes. Titled in pencil on the reverse, "Gatesgarth, Buttermere", with the date.

Gatesgarth is the small settlement east of Buttermere, on the western climb to the Honister Pass: one of the most walked and most drawn spots for English watercolorists of the first third of the 19th century.

Medium: Monochrome watercolor (gray wash) on paper.
Date: 1829.
Dimensions: 12.8 x 8.1 in (32.5 x 20.7 cm).
Condition: Paper toned, with scattered damp staining and wear at the edges.
