Morning. This engraving was drawn, engraved, and published by William Hogarth in 1738. Different editions have been issued of this engraving. This print probably belongs to the end of 18th century or the beginning of 19th century. It bears a stamp at the bottom and right side. It is the first of four engravings that Hogarth made named 'Four times of the day' in 1738. In 'Morning', a lady makes her way to church, shielding herself with her fan from the shocking view of two men pawing at the market girls. The scene is the west side of the piazza at Covent Garden, indicated by a part of the Palladian portico of Inigo Jones's Church of St Paul visible behind Tom King's Coffee House, a notorious venue celebrated in pamphlets of the time. The print has a piece of tape on the back to repair a scratch. A small piece of paper is missing in the lower left and upper left corners. The edges have slight scratches. The image is not affected. Plate size: 48x40,3 cm. Four Times of the Day is a series of four oil paintings by English artist William Hogarth. They were completed in 1736 and in 1738 were reproduced and published as a series of four engravings. They are humorous depictions of life in the streets of London, the vagaries of fashion, and the interactions between the rich and poor.

Original engraving designed, engraved and published by William Hogarth (1697-1764) in 1738: "Morning", the first of the four prints of the series "Four Times of the Day". On a freezing winter morning, a richly dressed lady makes her way to church by the busy Covent Garden market; a boy at her side carries her prayer book, while beggar women warm themselves at a fire and young gallants court the market girls at the door of Tom King's Coffee House.

In the background stands the portico of St Paul's church with its clock. The series, a satirical look at London life through the course of a day, is one of Hogarth's most famous. The print bears the title "Morning" and the 1738 publication line below, keeps wide margins and has a collector's stamp in violet ink at the lower right.
