Original engraving designed and engraved by William Hogarth (1697-1764) in 1725-26 to illustrate "Hudibras", Samuel Butler's satirical poem: "Hudibras and the Lawyer", number seven of a series of twelve. The portly knight Hudibras, hat in hand, comes to seek the advice of a long-wigged lawyer, standing in his chambers among shelves of books and bundles of papers beside a figure of Justice with her scales, while two clerks work at the table.
William Hogarth was one of the finest engravers of the 18th century and made several series of prints, often satirising the society of his time; Hudibras satirises the hypocrisy and pomposity of 17th-century Puritanism. The print is signed in the plate and bears the title and verses of the poem below, the date "1641" on the cabinet at the right and a collector's stamp at the lower right.
