James Smillie (Edinburgh, 1807 - Poughkeepsie, 1885) emigrated to New York and became the most highly regarded landscape engraver in the United States of his day, responsible for the engravings of Thomas Cole's The Voyage of Life. Geo. W. Clarke and James Fanning are named below the image as principals of the school.
