Original 1836 steel engraving with St Martin's Church at the Carfax crossroads, in the very center of Oxford, and the corner houses of Cornmarket. Drawn and engraved by George Hollis — at the foot, "G. Hollis del. et sc." — and published in the Gentleman's Magazine for July of that year.

The church was demolished in 1896 to widen the crossroads and only the tower survives today, the well-known Carfax Tower, so that this view documents a vanished building.
