Original 19th-century mezzotint of the ruins of Holyrood Chapel, Edinburgh, by moonlight: the roofless nave, the blind arcading covered with ivy and the great window at the end silhouetted against the sky. The lower margin gives it as engraved by H. Dawe after a painting by J. F. Ellis. Laid down on card, with the title in manuscript below.

Mezzotint is the ideal technique for a nocturne of this kind: the work goes from black to light, scraping the grounded copper, and gives the velvety grays that carry the whole moonlight effect here.
