Original outline engraving executed in 1861 by Joaquin Pi y Margall after a drawing by John Flaxman, the English sculptor whose fame rested above all on his illustrations to the classics. From the Spanish edition of Flaxman's complete works.
Original hand-coloured lithograph after a drawing by John Gendall, dated 1824, showing the mausoleum at Trentham, Staffordshire, seat of the Marquis of Stafford. The austere stone building, crowned by a large cross, rises among groves and cypresses at the end of a path, with a small figure by the entrance.
The mausoleum was built in the early 19th century by Charles Heathcote Tatham for the Marquises of Stafford and is one of the boldest examples of English Neoclassical funerary architecture. The print bears the title "Mausoleum, at Trentham (the Seat of the Marquis of Stafford)" below, the signature "J. Gendall del." at the left and, in the upper right corner, the reference "Plate 2. Vol. IV".
