Etching by Bernard Picart (1673-1733) dated 1730: at the foot of Calvary, the body of Christ, just taken down, lies on the shroud surrounded by the holy women, while above the executioners unnail the second crucified man. A print of great dramatic force, among the French engraver's finest.

As the caption states, Picart worked from the grisaille painted by Rembrandt, one foot high by ten inches wide, then in the cabinet of Mr. J. de Bary in Amsterdam. Picart specialized in reproducing the old masters and his work is much appreciated.
