Amand-Durand (1831-1905) transferred the image to the copper by photomechanical means, bit it in acid and printed it by hand on damp paper, just like an etching. His impressions of the last quarter of the 19th century reproduce the gradations of the original so faithfully that they are often mistaken for antique impressions.
