Original pencil drawing of the gatehouse of Carisbrooke Castle, on the Isle of Wight, with the approach ramp and a solitary figure. Careful work, the sheet trimmed to an arch at the top, with a good handling of the grays in the masonry and the trees.
Carisbrooke is the fortress where Charles I of England was held between 1647 and 1648, before his execution; the gatehouse drawn here, flanked by two towers, is its most recognizable image.
