Goya etched the series between 1810 and 1815 and never published it in his lifetime. The first edition was issued in eight parts of ten prints, numbered on the cover, and was printed in two sessions; in the second some errors in the lettering were corrected. According to Thomas Harris, the crispness of the captions points to the first printing (1a).
